Association policy on the award of grants

Conference grants are awarded only for conferences that are open to all and are held in the UK or Ireland.

In each year, a maximum of three awards can be made for events to be held at any given institution, meaning a university or any other appropriate educational or research charity. The awarding committee will prioritise geographical spread over multiple events at the same institution.

The Association will only fund conferences that are thematically coherent and philosophically innovative. The Association does fund interdisciplinary conferences, but only if they have a substantial philosophical element.

Applications are assessed on their merits in each round on a one-off basis. The Mind Association does not enter into long-term funding arrangements with any recurring conference series.

Applications must offer good value for money. All expenses must be reasonable and required for the event.

Applicants will need to explain how their event adheres to the BPA/SWIP Good Practice Scheme and the BPA/SWIP Guidelines for Accessible Conferences.

When putting the conference programme together, conference organizers should ensure that early career researchers (i.e. those below the level of senior lecturer) are prominently represented.

Funds may be requested for reasonable costs of accommodation, subsistence, room hire, and travel.

Mind Association funds cannot be used for international flights. The Mind Association does not typically fund domestic flights but will consider doing so for accessibility reasons or when more environmentally friendly transport is unavailable.

The Mind Association does not typically contribute to the costs of conference attendance for delegates other than speakers, organisers, chairs, and commentators, though will consider doing so where other participants are essential to the event.

The Mind Association will consider applications for online events, including their administration, so long as all costs are fully justified within the application.

Successful applications should advertise Mind Association support on their conference materials.

The Mind Association does not provide feedback on applications. Decisions are final.
